Historically, the district’s name was derived from a Kirat king Maranghang/Mawarang, later called Morang during the Kirat regime for the Kirat administrative zone.[i] Gograha was its old name Biratnagar, present Morang district headquarters under the Koshi region. During the Rana regime, the term Biratnagar was coined based on the Birat kingdom. During the Mahabharata period, Birat was a king of Kirat [ii]. Today people believe that King Birat’s actual capital of the Mahabharata period was located in Budhanagar V.D.C., 10 km southeast of Biratnagar. The district of Morang is one of the districts of Eastern Terai comprising 65 VDCs where 66 government health institutions provide primary health care services.
